My god--these men were either incredibly brave, desperate for work, or completely insane! Or all of the above. Anyone know if there were any casualties on this job?

I recall from a PBS documentary that there were a greater number of casualites builing the Transbay bridge than the (more difficult) Golden Gate bridge, in part because the designer insisted on a number of additional safety measures including a netting under the entire structure.
